Understanding Import VAT
What is Import VAT?
Import VAT is VAT charged on goods imported into a country. It is usually paid at the point of importation to customs authorities and may be claimed back as input VAT if the importer is VAT registered and holds valid supporting documents.
How Import VAT is Calculated
Import VAT is generally calculated on the total of:
- The customs value of the imported goods
- Plus any customs duty payable
- Multiplied by the applicable VAT rate
Can Import VAT be Claimed?
Import VAT may be claimed as input VAT if the importer is VAT registered and the goods are imported for taxable supplies, provided valid customs documentation is available.
Important: This is an estimate only. Actual Import VAT may differ based on customs
valuation rules, additional charges, or legislative requirements.
